Traditional in looks. Yet, smart and stylish. With automation technology integrated into the construction, Shajikumar’s house in Mayanad, Kozhikode, is a combination of sound architecture joining hands with the best of technology.

A quintessential Malayali turns nostalgic at the thought of home even while enjoying the comforts of an abode in the West or the East. Shajikumar was one such Malayali. He wanted to build a house. And his thoughts naturally turned to a home in the midst of pastoral settings, the way it was when he was a child. Thus came up his house in Mayanad, mixing tradition with the modern.

With automatic gates and CCTV cameras monitoring every movement, the house was designed by Ajaykumar who runs the Kozhikode-based firm Design Patio. A first look gives off the impression that an old house has been renovated and made to look ship-shape. Set in three elevations, the three-floored house is a picture of sophistication with its sloping roofs and Monier tiles paved over them.

The 3,300 sq ft structure stands on 16 cents of land. The entrance to the house is traditionally grand. Fine wood paneling greets you as you step in. It’s a long passage that one steps in from the main entrance. There are several other rooms built to the sides of the passageway. A lot of planning has gone into creating expansiveness and comfort. The partition between the living and dining space is an example of this care given to the concept of comfort.

The highlight of the interior is the centrally-located courtyard with a small “pond” within. The pergola glass opening on top lets in ample sunlight. The courtyard is surrounded on all sides with verandahs and pillars. The cladding tiles within the courtyard make it all the more attractive. The courtyard extends right up to the top. An aquarium to its side is a grand piece.

The partitions that separate the dining section from the passageway have glass pieces arranged symmetrically in wood designs. A curio shelf in plywood paneling separates the living space from the passage.

All of the available space has been utilized. There’s a smart home system below the stairway. A wooden rocking cot hangs by the side of the courtyard. One can relax on the swing and watch television from the unit in the smart home system.

There are four bedrooms in all, two up and two down. Each bedroom has its own color theme. The painting on one of the bedroom walls is an attractive feature. All the rooms have attached bathrooms and built-in wardrobes. A study space and a family-living complete the floor above.

The kitchen is simple. The storage panels are all of the teak wood and the countertop has been done up in granite.

A balcony upstairs gives a good view. The house has the added luxury of an outhouse by its side. The owners are happy that they got a house with the kind of style they had visualized along with the security and safety provided by modern technology.
