Puthukulangara: Hundreds of people gathered on the banks of Varattar river as an effort was launched to rejuvenate the dying river, a tributary of Pampa. The Varatte aar (let the river be reborn) program breathed life into the river bed ones again as traditional vanchipattu (boat songs), sung by the attendees, resounded through the valley.

Political leaders also joined in the river walk as people traced the path of the stream. Excited to see the spirit, many who came as spectators also joined the walk. The river walk started at 7.15am from Koyipram jetty, with finance minister Thomas Isaac leading it. Next destination was Puthukulangara, where the tributary originates.

Rain welcomed the walkers at Puthukulangara, sending a positive signal that the river flow could increase. As the rain intensified, the inauguration was shifted from the shore. Once it abated, people thronged the river once again, with minister Mathew T. Thomas also joining.

A massive crowd, including Veena George MLA, joined the walkers at Parumoottil Kadavu Bridge.

The group took a breakfast break at Pannivizha. By the time the group crossed Thevarmannil jetty, the sun was up and shining. They crossed Thiruvanvandoor panchayat, Kunnathumannil jetty, Anayara Prayatt jetty and Thalayar Vanchimoottil, tracing their beloved river and the memories associated with it.
