These food packets from Victoria give the hungry their fill of happiness

Palakkad: The ‘Pothichoru’ project initiated by the students of Govt Victoria College is indeed remarkable and has gained huge appreciation and encouragement. The project which began a year ago aims to give at least one meal a week to the poor and homeless who wander about in the town.

The project, started by the college union has so far been enthusiastically received by the students. The mission is to bring an extra packet of food along with their regular lunch boxes on all working Fridays which the union members would collect and distribute among the needy.

The food packets are usually distributed to the homeless who have made bus stands, municipal stadium and shop verandahs their home It is also given to the inmates of Sabari Asram. The project has been running successfully for over 52 weeks now, and the union plans to expand their activities distributing food packets twice a week.

The ‘Pothichoru’ project is managed and coordinated by the union members Ameen, Salman, Abiram and Poornima. Though it is not compulsory to bring the extra meal parcel, the students have overwhelmingly responded to it and are actively taking part in this project.

Around 30-60 food packets are collected from every department. While the Malayalam department which has less number of students manages to donate at least 30 packets, departments like Economics and History with more students donate more than 60 packets each.

After a year of incredible effort, the college union now aims to distribute food packets on Mondays as well counting on the overwhelming response to the voluntary initiative. The social commitment of each student of this college is evident when they confidently say that whoever heads the union, the ‘Pothichoru’ project will continue.
