Kozhikode: When Puthiyottil Harris (33) and Vazhayil Faisal (34) left for their homes for Bakrid this year, little did they know that they were going to be part of a life-saving mission at their native place here at Thottilpalam.

For Harris, who’s a merchant in Alappuzha, the homecoming was filled with nostalgia and on that fateful evening, he was out to take a stroll on the banks of the river. Meanwhile, a group of boys was playing football at Thaleekara Thekkeveetil ground, which was close-by.

After a game or two, two of the boys – Mihaj and Minsal – decided to slosh around in the river and take a bath. But what they did for fun soon turned out to be a misadventure and the duo, who didn’t know swimming, started drowning.

Luckily for them, Harris happened to see them drowning. Without pausing to think, he dived into the river risking his life and pulled one of them to safety.

However, while trying to rescue the second one, he found himself drowning. It was then that Faisal (34), who was on his way to watch the football match, saw them drowning. In no time at all, Faisal who’s an experienced swimmer jumped into the river and saved the two lives. Faisal works in Qatar.

Both of the rescuers were felicitated by the natives of Thottilpalam panchayath. They were also honored by Paikkalangadi Haritha Arts and Sports Club.
