Kanhangad: Single and ready-to-mingle men poured out their woes at a meeting organised by a women’s collective at Madikkai last week. The novel event organised by Kudumbasree was a time for reflection of Kerala’s changing social milieu.

While some of the men put the blame for their still-bachelor status on women’s search for a potential partner with a white-collar job, fatter paycheck and physical appeal, the others said that they were just seeing the empowerment of women after centuries of male domination.

The Kudumbasree self-help unit which organised the event said that they wanted to know about the problems and challenges faced by men who were unable to find partners. The women said that the exchange of views would help young women to form a better understanding of their future prospects.

The meeting was attended by several women who work in Kudumbasree units in Madikkai and surrounding panchayats. Many of them were accompanied by their family members.

The men said that they too faced society’s prejudices. Girls were no longer looking for a stable marriage but a handsome and well-settled partner.

The participants also talked about social evils such as domestic abuse, dowry and the lust for gold. The speakers raised serious concerns about the mounting cases of family problems in police stations and courts.

The Kudumbasree workers arranged the gathering through a social media campaign. The meet was part of the unit’s anniversary celebrations from April 18 to April 20.

Madikkai panchayat president C Prabhakaran presided over the meeting, while historian C Balan, ‘Ethirdisha’ editor P K Suresh Kumar, district panchayat former president P Syamala Devi, Kinanoor Karinthalam panchayat president A Vidhubala, Kanhangad circle inspector C K Sunil Kumar, Chandru Vellarikkund and advocate Manoj Kumar organised helped organise the meet.
