Kochi: A new marine species has been discovered by researchers attached to the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) from the mangrove forest on Valanthakad Island. It has been named 'Victoriopisa cusatensis' after the university. The amphipod, a type of crustacean, has mangroves as its habitat.

The crustacean was discovered by researchers of the marine biology, microbiology and biochemistry departments of CUSAT School of Marine Sciences.

'Victoriopisa cusatensis' is the third species of Victoriopisa genus found in Indian water bodies.

The research team included Philomina Honey, S Bijoy Nandan and P R Jayachandran. Their find was published in the international scientific journal, Zootaxa.

CUSAT is involved in research in the field of marine science over several years.
