Kattakada (Thiruvananthapuram): A 68-year-old woman collapsed and died on Monday while waiting in a serpentine queue in the scorching summer heat to submit application for the chief minister’s Jana Santhwana program.
The deceased was identified as Omanayamma, wife of late Sankara Pillai, of Padma Vilasam, Anakkode, near Pattakulam in Kattakada grama panchayat.
The incident occurred around 11.30 am in front of the taluk office in Kattakada.
She is survived by children Girija, Rama, Geetha, Anil Kumar and Sunil Kumar.
During the last few days, collectorates and taluk offices across the state have been witnessing heavy rush of senior citizens due to misinformation that applications should be submitted at the earliest to receive the financial aid of Rs 10,000 under the scheme.
Meanwhile, M. V. Jayarajan, private secretary to the chief minister, said that though the government had issued orders sanctioning the launch of the Jana Santhwana fund to provide financial assistance to the homeless and the elderly, the details of the scheme was not finalized.
“There is no need to submit applications now,” he added.
