Power play in police HQ to checkmate Senkumar

Thiruvananthapuram: The state government transferred 100 DySPs in haste on Friday before T.P. Senkumar takes charge as state police chief, as a precautionary measure.

Senkumar, who was replaced by Loknath Behera as state police chief, had moved the Supreme Court challenging the verdict and gained a favorable verdict.

The transfers come close on the heels of a major reshuffle from AIGs to ADGPs at the police headquarters on Thursday to control and monitor Senkumar.

Files are routed to the state police chief through AIG, DIG, IG and ADGP at the police headquarters. The government has placed its confidants in these posts and has also selected certain officers who do not share a rapport with Senkumar.

The lawyers of Senkumar had mentioned about these officers in the Supreme Court too.

The reshuffle of DySPs was mostly in police and vigilance. Officers who had been probing controversial corruption cases have been shifted to insignificant positions.

As many as 22 DySPs in vigilance have been transferred. Officers probing the bar bribery case against Kerala Congress leader K.M.Mani and also cases against senior bureaucrat Tom Jose, former ministers K.Babu and E.P.Jayarajan, the Pattoor land scam, the Mookunnimala quarry case, appointments in Agency for Non-Conventional Energy and Rural Technology and the sports lottery scam, involving Sports Council president T.P. Dasan, have also been transferred.

Probe into these cases were directly monitored by former Vigilance and Anti Corruption Bureau director, Jacob Thomas. Incumbent Loknath Behera would takeover as VACB director. The government had created an ex-cadre ADGP post in vigilance and posted Anil Kant as ADGP, vigilance.
