Pazhayannur: Sajeesh would think twice before putting on his peach shirt again. The 30-year-old footwear maker from Vennur is yet to recover from the traumatic experience at the hands of a couple of policemen who were on the lookout for a fugitive in similar attire.
Sajeesh went to the Shoranur railway station on Tuesday morning to catch a train to his workplace at Farook in Kozhikode. He was walking out of a nearby restaurant after breakfast around 8:30 am when a man in plainclothes grabbed him by the collar from behind. Another cop in uniform ran up to him and seized him.
The two cops asked him if he were not “Patti” Chacko and handcuffed him, Sajeesh said. They made him stand in the street with his hands cuffed for half an hour while they waited for the police jeep to come. He told his captors his name and address but they refused to listen to him.
Inside the Cheruthuruthi police station, the cops locked him up and hit him on his chest and stomach, Sajeesh said. They checked his bag and examined his mobile phone. Finally, they realized their mistake and let the hapless worker go. Sajeesh walked out of the police station around 10:30 am after signing on a white paper, he said in his complaint to the district superintendent of police.
Sajeesh was admitted to the Government Hospital at Chelakkara with complaints of pain and urine blockage. He was later referred to the Medical College Hospital at Mulankunnathukavu.
Who is the real culprit?
The policemen were looking for “Patti” Chacko, an absconding criminal who had several cases charged against him in various police stations in Palakkad, Thrissur and Ernakulam districts. He was later arrested from Shoranur.
The police said that they were tipped off by their counterparts in the Special Branch that the criminal was expected to come to the Shoranur railway station on Tuesday morning.
The policemen handcuffed the suspect for their own safety and he was let off within half hour of reaching the station when they were convinced about the mix-up, assistant sub-inspector Abdul Khader said.
The police informants had said that Chacko was wearing an orange-like shirt and mundu. Unfortunately, Sajeesh was wearing a shirt in a similar shade. The policemen who hauled him to the police station sent his photo to their contacts, who told them that they have got the wrong man.
