Kannur Brennan College magazine reignites national anthem row The Government Brennan College magazine titled 'Pellet' that landed in controversy for allegedly insulting the national anthem.

Kannur: A controversy has erupted over a college magazine after allegations that its contents insulted the national flag and the anthem. The annual magazine of the Government Brennan College at Thalassery was brought out by the college union which is headed by the Students' Federation of India (SFI).

One of the hand-drawn images in the magazine shows a young couple in a compromising position as the national flag appeared on the theater screen.

Following the controversy, the magazine distribution was stopped and attempts were made to retrieve the copies already with the students.

The magazine titled 'Pellet' was brought out by the SFI activists as part of the 125th year celebrations of Brennan College at Thalassery, the alma mater of Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has demanded action against those behind the drawings.

However, college principal Murlidas said there was nothing wrong with the magazine. "But certain drawings, when viewed in a different angle, had caused 'misunderstanding'," he told PTI.

"There was nothing wrong as such with the magazine. If viewed in a narrow-minded manner, it causes some misunderstanding. We are trying to convince the students about it,' he said.

The Supreme Court had earlier directed cinema halls to play the national anthem before screening to "instill committed patriotism and nationalism" among the citizens. This had led to many protests and even the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) in the state capital had witnessed many agitations over the SC order.
