Karunagappally (Kollam): A pregnant woman who sought a routine gynec check was prescribed abortion tablets without her knowledge, a complaint lodged with the government taluk hospital superintendent said.
Pravita Prasad of Kulasekharapuram village, two months into pregnancy, was earlier asked by the doctor at the hospital to get a scan. She visited the hospital again and met the doctor.
The complaint said the doctor checked the scanning report and prescribed some medicines. The doctor also asked her to take the tablets and change her clothes to 'lungi and banian' at the labor room. Pravita was suspicious and checked with a nearby medical store as to what the prescribed medicines were. To her terrible shock, she was told one of the medicines was for termination of pregnancy, while the other one was vitamin tablets.
Pravita said the duty doctor and the nurses also confirmed what the chemist had told her. Her complaint demanded action against the doctor who was trying to abort her fetus without her consent. She warned of legal action if the superintendent failed to act.
The superintendent said a report had been submitted to the district medical officer on the basis of Pravita's complaint.
The accused doctor admitted that she erred in prescribing the medicine, but blamed it on the heavy rush at the hospital. Abortion was done only after legal procedures, she pointed out and claimed she explained the mistake to the patient when she returned with the tablets.
