All the fifty-three jails in the state, including the sub-jails, will have electric fencing around their compound walls.Thiruvananthapuram: The central jails in the state will soon be equipped with gadgets that can detect the use of mobile phones, and laser-scanning systems to keep constant vigil on the movement of prisoners and their visitors.
A decision to install electric fencing around all the jails to enhance security was also made at the prison high-level committee meeting held under the chairmanship of additional chief secretary (Home) Subrata Biswas on Thursday.
Recently, director-general (DG), Prisons, R. Sreelekha, had ordered a security audit in all jails in the state based on intelligence reports on rampant use of mobile phones by inmates. The mobile jammers installed at the central jails in Thiruvananthapuram, Viyyur, and Kannur by spending lakhs of rupees had been damaged by the inmates.
The new hand-held mobile detectors would alert the authorities if there are cellphones, batteries or chargers within the guarded premises, officials said.
The laser scanning system, which will be mounted on the watch tower at the Poojapura central jail, will be able to map the interiors of the prison even at nighttime and help detect movements inside building. Action against Viyyur jail superintendent
Meanwhile, director-general (DG), Prisons, R. Sreelekha has recommended the government to initiate disciplinary action against Viyyur central jail superintendent M. K. Vinod Kumar for failing to comply with the order to conduct routine inspections at the jail.
