Converted Kerala woman's mother moves SC, seeking NIA probe into radicalization Bindu, Nimisha, aka, Fathima

Thiruvananthapuram: A Kerala woman, whose daughter is believed to have fled to Syria after converting to Islam from Hinduism, has moved the Supreme Court seeking a top-level investigation into the alleged shady scheme of religious conversion in the state.

Bindu, hailing from Attukal, has sought a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the conversion of her daughter Nimisha and similar incidents.

Nimisha was a final year dental student in Kasaragod when she met and got married to a Christian youth, who later converted to Islam along with her.

The couple is among a group of 20-odd missing people from Kerala, who allegedly have left the country to join Islamic State.

In her plea, Bindu said the probe by the Kerala police into the missing case was not effective. She alleged that foreign funds have been flowing into the state for facilitating planned conversion and radicalization of youths.

Reports of Bindu's plea comes close on the heels of the Kerala government submitting an affidavit to the Supreme Court saying there was no need for an NIA probe into the sensational Hadiya case, in which a Hindu woman converted to Islam and married a Muslim man.

Bindu and three lawyers of the Kerala High Court will become parties in the Hadiya case. The apex court had asked the NIA to investigate the case of Akhila Ashokan alias Hadiya, a 25-year-old Hindu woman hailing from Vaikom in Kottayam district, who converted to Islam and married Shafin Jahan.

The woman’s parents moved the Kerala High Court in 2016, alleging that she was radicalized. The HC, in turn, annulled her marriage. Shafin then moved the Supreme Court, which asked the NIA to investigate the circumstances leading to the woman's conversion and marriage in detail.
