Nedumbassery, Kochi: Villagers in Vayalkara are still in disbelief after their role model and young hero, Safeer Karim, an Indian police service(IPS) officer was arrested on charges of cheating in the UPSC mains exam held in Chennai.
The disgraced officer, once a revered figure for his hard work and stellar success, was caught red handed while copying and has left the residents of this little village shell-shocked.
Safeer, who had won IPS in the 2014 civil service exam with the 112th rank, wrote the mains exam again this year to improve his rank and move into the Indian administrative service (IAS).
Safeer was actively conducting civil service coaching classes before he got into IPS. Later he expanded his coaching classes to Kochi and Kozhikode and later to Hyderabad and Bhopal.
Safeer and his student at the coaching class, Joicy Joice, fell in love and married later.
Dr Ram Babu, the director of Joicy and Safeer's coaching center has been arrested for helping him cheat in the exam using bluetooth devices and cameras.
Joicy was also arrested for helping her husband and will be brought to Chennai for further investigation.
At a reception accorded to him in his native village, Safeer had declared that he will start civil service coaching at the local school, also his alma mater. Later he did organize classes there.
Modus Operandi
The officer, who reportedly trawled the dark net for a technique to cheat discreetly in the highly competitive exam hid three devices on his body before entering the examination hall.
He concealed a bluetooth device in his ear, a camera on his shirt button and a mobile phone in his socks.
The camera on his shirt button would scan the question paper and send it across, to which his wife sitting miles away in Hyderabad would relay answers.
'Munnabhai model?'
Joicy and Ram Babu are reported to have told the police that the cheating was inspired by the Sanjay Dutt-starrer 'Munnabhai MBBS' in which the professors can be seen dictating answers to Dutt over Bluetooth helping him clear MBBS exam.
'Commissioner' inspired
Safeer, currently on probation as the assistant superintendent of police in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, had once said in an interview that he was inspired by the Suresh Gopi starrer 'Commissioner'. The tainted officer, will now face legal action and also lose his high job.
