Chennai: A court here has granted bail to tainted IPS officer Safeer Karim's wife Joicy Joyce after their year-and-a-half-old daughter fell ill. Safeer and his wife were arrested and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days after he was caught cheating in the UPSC mains exam using 'hi-tech' methods.
Joicy, who had dictated answers to her husband on phone from Hyderabad, had taken along her daughter also to the Puzhal Women Prison in Chennai. She was granted bail considering the ill-health of the baby girl.
The defense lawyer had informed the court that the child was not keeping well in the jail and that her health could further deteriorate in the prison. The prosecution too did not object to the demand on humanitarian grounds.
NO BAIL FOR SAFEER KARIM
However, the court rejected the bail plea of her husband, Safeer Karim.
The Tamil Nadu cadre IPS probationary officer from Aluva in Kerala was caught cheating during the UPSC mains examination at a center in Egmore, Chennai.
Safeer, an assistant superintendent of police in Nanguneri, Tirunelveli, allegedly took a cellphone, a bluetooth-enabled miniature camera in a shirt button and wireless earpieces into the examination hall in Presidency girls higher secondary school.
Safeer, who had cleared the IPS in the 2014 civil service exam with 112th rank, wrote the mains exam again this year to improve his rank and move into the Indian administrative service (IAS).
Safeer, a graduate in Electronics Engineering, had secured a top rank in the Common Admission Test (CAT) for MBA admissions. But he chose to pursue civil services and joined a training academy in New Delhi.
