For outlying Marayur, an 'outcast' police station

Marayur: The Janamaitri police station in Marayur is a literal outcast. The station has only 10 policemen on active duty in a shift. The station is of strategic importance to the state as it has jurisdiction over the Maoist-infested Kerala border with Tamil Nadu.

The sanctioned staff strength of the station is: one sub-inspector (SI), 3 additional sub-inspectors, 8 senior civil police officers, 26 civil police officers, 3 women civil police officers, one driver.

Three of the additional sub inspectors have been redeployed as minister’s bodyguards, two civil police officers are posted at the deputy superintendent of police (DYSP)'s office and two at the circle inspector's office. One each are assigned writer, guard, and court duties. This leaves the station staff-crippled and investigation and law and order duties take a back seat.

The SI has jurisdiction over a 50 km area, from Ettam Mile at Munnar to Chinnar near the Tamil Nadu border. There is only one jeep at the station. The officers cannot reach crime and accident scenes swiftly if the jeep is taken away for routine repair.

On vacation

Most of the officers posted at the Marayur station are those transferred on punishment. A majority are from Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam districts and they proceed on leave once they assume duty. The station provides accommodation for sub-inspectors and additional sub-inspectors.
