Kothamangalam: Harrowing wails of help woke up a village along the Thattekad forest range Wednesday night.
The cries for help led the villagers to an abandoned well, where they found an elephant calf making desperate attempts to get out of the well, but in vain. The little jumbo, that looked around 6 years old, had inadvertently fallen into the well and just couldn't find its way out.
The concerned villagers then sought the help of forest officials, who reached the village in no time. But by then a herd of elephants too descended on the village and stood guard by the well, blocking the way for the forest officials. However, in the wee hours on Thursday, the forest officials managed to get near the well and begin their rescue efforts. The personnel brought in a JCB, broke down a side of the well and created a path for the baby jumbo to walk out. The overjoyed little one happily waddled out and joined its herd, who then made their way back to the forests.
A forest official, who took part in the rescue mission, said that he had never seen such a display of love and affection by a bunch of jumbos towards their little one in his service life.
