Kottayam accident Nalini wanted to use the washroom in the rear coach of a stationary Karaikkal Express on platform no 3.

Kottayam: A woman selling lottery tickets was crushed under a train on Thursday when she panicked and jumped off a moving coach, thinking that the train was leaving the station.

Nalini, 64, wife of Unni of Gandhi Colony in Oravaykal, had reached the Kottayam railway station in the evening and wanted to use the washroom in the rear coach of a stationary Karaikkal Express on platform no 3.

Even as she was inside the loo, the train started moving as the engine was being attached to the train for a coach rejig. Nalini, assuming that the train was leaving the station, jumped out in panic. She slipped and fell under the train and the wheels crushed her.

The Railway Protection Force and Railway Police personnel could not save her life.

The train, which was running as Ernakulam-Kottayam Passenger, was scheduled to leave at 5.20pm.
