Thiruvananthapuram: In a bid to create a comprehensive and retrievable database of valuables stored in temple vaults, the state government will evaluate the assets and create a digital database.
In the first phase, the evaluation, on the lines of the one carried out at the famed Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in the capital, will be done in temples under the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB).
Devaswom minister Kadakampalli Surendran has tasked Devaswom secretary KR Jyotilal with the job.
The directive follows reports that high-priced ornaments, including gold, was disappearing from temple vaults. The authorities were at a loss to assess the value of lost items as there was no data available. The value of some of the lost items would be much higher than its apparent weight as it had antique value too, sources said.
This apart, there are robberies, the recent ones being at the Anadavalleswaram Temple in Kollam and the Sree Krishna Temple in Ambalapuzha.
In several temples, ornaments and other valuables were bundled in clothes and kept inside the vaults. In some temples, it was not known as to how many bundles were in the vaults. The security of the temple vaults will also be evaluated, sources said.
