Thiruvananthapuram: Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor went live on Facebook on the new-year's day, to express his grief on the trail of death and destruction left behind by cyclone Ockhi.

“About 149 people are confirmed dead and 'even larger number' of people have gone missing in the disaster. Many have been presumed not likely to return. As life must go on, we are doing what we can, not only to help the victims of the tragedy but also to ensure that if such natural disasters occur in the future, we will get better results in terms of preventive measures and search and rescue," he said.

Stating that he would be present with chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan at Vizhinjam to distribute the initial compensation to those affected in cyclone Ockhi, Tharoor said he had mentioned the gravity of the tragedy to the prime minister and other ministers concerned personally, as well as in his speech in the parliament. (The compensation was given away by the chief minister on the day and the MP was present at the function).

On schemes planned, he said Thiruvananthapuram woudl get three free wifi zones this year, at Napier museum, Shanghumukhom, and Kovalam. “I'm pleased that through the MPLAD scheme, we are, as a new year gift, able to set up three wifi zones in the constituency," he said. The zones will start functioning this week itself. "We are also associating with Google to introduce more smart classrooms in the constituency,” he said in English before switching to Malayalam and delivering the message.

He took time to answer queries from social media users during the session. He also did not forget to wish his friends and followers a happy year ahead in 2018.
