The State Human Rights Commission has ordered an inquiry into the reported assault by Anoop on fellow inmates for not cooperating with his drug trade inside the jail. Thrissur: M C Anoop, a convict in the T P Chandrasekharan murder case, held at the Viyyur Central Jail, is allegedly running a drug distribution ring inside the prison.
According to an anonymous letter found in the complaint box installed at the jail, Anoop, who was sentenced to life term in the sensational case, was raking in around Rs 50,000 a month by selling ganja, cigars and liquor to fellow inmates. The narcotics are reportedly being sold for about ten times their actual price.
Anoop, who grabbed a 'supervisor' job in the jail using his political connections, forced inmates to smuggle ganja and liquor into the prison whenever they were sent outside for work. Those who refused to obey would were tortured.
Two weeks ago, an inmate, Raheem, was beaten up by Anoop after he refused to collect a consignment thrown into the compound over the wall. Raheem, who suffered serious injuries in the attack, has been admitted to the Medical College Hospital. Another inmate, Shaji, was also attacked for similar reasons, the letter said.
Human rights commission orders probe
The State Human Rights Commission has ordered an inquiry into the reported assault by Anoop on fellow inmates for not cooperating with his drug trade inside the jail.
Commission member K Mohan Kumar has instructed the jail DGP to submit the inquiry report in three weeks.
The action was initiated after the Thrissur Sessions Court judge forwarded the anonymous letter found in the complaint box to the Human Rights Commission.
The case will be taken up for hearing on March 15.
