New Delhi: In a major blow to the ruling CPM in Kerala, party state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan's elder son Binoy has been accused of cheating a Dubai-based travel and tourism firm of Rs 13 crore.
Manorama News on Wednesday aired visuals of a copy of the complaint filed by Hasan Ismaeel Abdulla Almarzooqi, owner of JAAS Tourism LLC. In his complaint, he has sought the help of Indian officials for extraditing Binoy from India. The complainant alleged that Binoy had cheated him and his partner of Rs 13 crore and fled Dubai.
Let him answer: Kodiyeri
Kodiyeri said that it was up to Binoy to react to the controversy. Speaking to reporters, the CPM leader said as of now there was no complaint against his son.
He said Binoy was ready to face legal procedure.
Earlier, Malayala Manorama had reported that the investigators may seek help from Interpol to arrest and produce Binoy before the court.
The company is said to have sought the party’s intervention to resolve the case. According to company sources, the Dubai Public Prosecutor instructed the police to seek Interpol’s help to trace the accused after cheques drawn by him bounced and he fled Dubai.
A few months ago, the company, with the help of intermediaries, had discussed the matter with Kodiyeri. Though he had promised to repay the entire amount which his son owed to them, nothing happened thereafter.
The company claimed that the accused borrowed an amount of 3,13,200 UAE Dirhams (approximately Rs 53.61 lakh) on collateral security for purchasing an Audi car, and 45 lakh UAE Dirhams (approximately Rs 7.7 crore) for investing in business ventures in India, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Nepal.
He had given an assurance that the amount borrowed for business purposes would be repaid before June 1, 2016.
It was alleged that the accused defaulted in repayment of the car loan midway. The remaining amount to be paid was 2,09,704 UAE Dirhams (approximately Rs 36.06 lakh).
The sum of Rs 13 crore which the company wants to recover from him included bank interest and litigation expenses. The company alleged that the accused had five other criminal cases pending against him in Dubai courts and it was obvious that he availed the loan with wicked intentions.
Opposition parties Congress and BJP have termed the issue 'utmost serious' and sought a reaction from Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. However, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan is yet to make a statement on the case against his son.
