Chennai: The birthday party of P Binu, a gang leader hailing from Kerala who is in the wanted list of the Tamil Nadu police, was organized by a VIP based in Chennai. This information was given to the police by 73 goons who were nabbed during the celebration.
The police said that Binu belongs to a family hailing from Thrissur which came to Chennai years ago in search of a livelihood. Earlier, it was assumed that he belonged to Thiruvananthapuram.
Binu started off as a worker at a teashop in Choolaimedu. A karate expert, he soon got involved in petty crimes in the locality. Winning the favor of a local politician, Binu became his sidekick and later graduated into a gang leader.
Four years ago, Binu came to Kerala after he suffered from various ailments, including diabetes. However, he returned to Chennai recently and decided to renew his life of crime. Binu arranged his fortieth birthday party and invited the gangsters to the celebrations as part of this plan. Photos of Binu cutting the birthday cake with a sword went viral after the police nabbed the revelers.
Meanwhile, Chennai residents have expressed concern over the rising incidents of crime, bringing frightful memories of the days of the 'goonda raj' during the mid-80s to mid-90s. The gangsters were finally crushed and their reign over Chennai was brought to an end by police commissioner S Vijayakumar, also a Keralite, following a directive from the then chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
