Govt rejects Jacob Thomas' explanation, to go ahead with disciplinary action

Kochi: The Kerala government has decided to go ahead with disciplinary action against its former vigilance director DGP Jacob Thomas. The move comes after his explanation for criticizing the government for its handling of the Cyclone Ockhi crisis was rejected.

Chief secretary Paul Antony submitted a report to chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan recommending action against Jacob Thomas.

Following his criticism, Jacob Thomas was placed on suspension on the grounds that he openly criticized government policies and made provocative statements in violation of the All-India Service Rules. His statements incited Ockhi victims and turned people living in the coastal areas against the government, the suspension order said.

The order also pointed out that Jacob Thomas, who is a senior IPS officer in the state, also damaged the dignity and decorum of the post he holds.

Despite being part of the government, Jacob Thomas decided to take on the ruling dispensation on December 9, the International Anti-Corruption Day. He took to social media too to vent his anger.

People were afraid to stand up to corruption because there was no rule of law in the state. The corrupt have joined hands and there is a deliberate effort to silence those who are against corruption. He also ridiculed the government’s public relations drive as a cover-up of its failures, he said.

The government failed in carrying out rescue and relief operations of the Ockhi affected. Will the government react the same way had the victims of Ockhi belonged to rich families, he had asked.
