Kochi: A special court on Saturday found a Bihar native guilty in the first Islamic State (IS) recruitment case registered in Kerala. Yasmeen Mohammed Zahid was accused of helping in the recruitment of youths from Kerala to the terror outfit. She has been sentenced to seven years in prison.
The NIA special court in Ernakulam also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on her.
She was arrested by a special team of the Kerala police from the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi when she was about to leave the country for Kabul on July 30, 2016.
She is the second accused in the case which was first investigated by the Kerala police before being handed over to the NIA.
Last year, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had filed the chargesheet against two IS operatives Abdul Rashid Abdulla as the main accused, who motivated a number of youths from Kasaragod to leave India along with their families to join the Islamic State, and Yasmeen Mohammed Zahid.
There are 15 accused in the case. The NIA had chargesheeted only two as the 13 others including first accused, Rashid, were in Afghanistan and one in Syria.
Three are believed to be killed in air strikes in Afghanistan.
The case registered by the NIA in 2016 pertains to the alleged migration of 15 youths from Kasaragod to Afghanistan to join the terrorist outfit.
A probe by the NIA has established that Abdul Rashid Abdulla was the main conspirator, who motivated the youths from Kasaragod to join the Islamic State.
He conducted classes in Kasaragod and other places in support of the terrorist organisation, the agency had said.
Abdulla motivated one more set of 14 co-conspirators, including accused Yasmeen Mohammed, to join the proscribed organisation, it had said.
The NIA said the probe revealed that the conspiracy had been in operation since July 2015.
The probe has established that Abdulla had raised funds for the IS and transferred the money to Yasmeen, who utilised it for her activities with the intention of supporting the terrorist organisation.
