Sea invades land along various parts of Kerala When waves invaded the Thaickal beach road in Alappuzha.

Thiruvananthapuram: Rough sea is likely to batter the coastal areas of Kerala until Monday night, Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) said on Sunday.

Tides could go up as high as three metres, INCOIS said, asking those who dwell in the coastal areas, fishers and tourists to be vigilant. The alert comes even as sea turned rough in various parts of the state on Sunday.

Rough sea has been wreaking havoc in the coastal stretch from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod for the past two days. Hundreds of families have been relocated after several houses were damaged. In Thiruvananthapuram, 10 houses were damaged on Saturday. As many as six relief camps have been opened at Valiyathura.

High tides have been forecast off Kollam, Alappuzha, Kochi, Ponnani, Kannur and Kasaragod coasts from 5.30 pm on Sunday to 11.30 pm on Monday.

Incidents of rough sea were reported from Alappuzha, Malappuram, Kannur, Kollam and Ernakulam on Sunday.

Alappuzha

Around 3.30 pm on Sunday, the sea breached the land at Chennavaeli, Kattoor and Arattupuzha in Alappuzha district. In Ottamassery, the houses along the coast are flooded with sea water. Many of these dwellings are on the verge of collapse.

Malappuram

Waves became stronger at Ponnani in Malappuram district also. Sea has flooded the Jhankar Road and fish godowns.

Eranakulam

In Ernakulam district, roads along the coast at several places are inundated. The situation is grave at the beaches in Njarakkal Arattuvazhy, Nayarambalam Veliyathanparambu and Edavanakkad Aniyil. Though the sea walls have been submerged, the houses in these areas are safe so far.  

Kollam

Waves became stronger at Azheekal, Iravipuram and Alappad. Traffic has been prohibited on the Kollam-Pravur stretch of the national highway after roads were damaged.

Kannur

Sea became rough at Thalassery and Muzhuppilangad. Around 90 houses in Pettippalam colony, Thalassery, are under threat.
