Thiruvananthapuram: The state disaster management authority has issued an alert regarding the thundershowers witnessed in Kerala during summer months. Officials said that the intensity of the lightning would be severe and asked people to take necessary the precautions.

Thunder and lightning accompany the summer showers, which are usually experienced from 3 pm to 8 pm.

The precautions include:

Lightning conductors should be installed in high-rise buildings.

When lightning is noticed nearby, switch off all electrical appliances.

It is advisable to turn off the main switch also.

Remove metallic ornaments, including gold and silver jewellery.

Avoid standing in open spaces.

Do not stay in contact with metallic objects.

Keep a safe distance from tall trees, towers, fences and telephone and electric lines.

Using metal staircases will invite danger.

Water is a very good conductor of the electric charge in lightning. So, keep away from water bodies during thundershowers. Also, refrain from taking a dip during this time.

Never try to detach the cable connection when there is lightning.

If ring conductors are installed, lightning will not hit houses through tall trees nearby.

Several devices are available which protect electrical appliances from lightning.

The lightning protection system should be set up conforming to the guidelines of the Bureau of Indian Standards.

Buildings hit by lightning are protected by conducting the electric charge away through the earthing system.
