IUML flag atop Congress office as fury over RS seat mounts Though it is not clear who tied the IUML flag on the Congress' flagpost, it is suspected that some angry party workers did the mischief.

Malappuram: The discontent brewing within the Congress party's Kerala unit over its decision to hand over a vacant Rajya Sabha seat to former ally Kerala Congress (M) has reached dizzy heights with angry activists hoisting the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) above the Congress' flag at the party office here.

Though it is not clear who tied the IUML flag on the Congress' flagpost, it is suspected that some angry party workers did the mischief on Thursday night. The District Congress Committee office functions at the Mohammed Abdur Rahiman Sahib Memorial building here.

Local Congress leaders, who came to the office Friday morning on hearing about the incident, removed the IUML flag immediately.

It is believed that IUML and its general secretary P K Kunhalikutty played a prominent role in making the Congress succumb to KC(M)'s pressure to concede the RS seat to it. Kunhalikutty was entrusted with the task of bringing the KM Mani-led party back to the Congress-led UDF.

Sources said IUML was adamant that the RS seat be given to KC(M) if it was the only way out to placate the party with six legislators in the Kerala Assembly.

Though Congress suggested that the next vacant seat will be given to KC(M), the latter did not approve it. The Congress decision has not gone down well with a section of party leaders and workers. Protesting the decision, KPCC secretary Jayanth resigned from the post on Thursday. The Kozhikode district unit of the Kerala Students Union, Congress' student-wing, also tendered resignation en masse.

Several Congress leaders have openly challenged the decision.
