A young man who became the focus of suspicion after the police and some relatives linked him to the disappearance of college student Jesna Maria James has finally broken his silence. He averred that he is not linked to the college girl's disappearance and claimed police are harassing him.
"I'm not Jesna's lover," he told a private television channel. "The last message that Jesna sent before vanishing read she was going to die. I had told the police and Jesna's kin about everything that I knew about her after she went missing. I do not know if she has a lover."
He said the police is harassing him though he had disclosed everything to them honestly. A day after she went missing, the youth had told the police about her message stating that she was planning to die. "Jesna had sent such messages even earlier. I had informed her brother immediately, but he told me to ignore."
Jesna's brother Jais John had said on Manorama News 'Counterpoint' that she had sent similar messages even earlier. Her last message before vanishing is also the same.
These details were provided to the police. "I don't have evidence to accuse the friend," he said, "though I do not rule out suspicion".
At the same time, Jais insisted that the youth should not be harassed.
Friends isolated
Meanwhile, close friends of Jesna asserted they had no connection to her fate, and lamented that they had become isolated because of repeated police grilling and suspicious approach.
Jesna's classmates termed her as an introvert and insisted she was unlikely to travel long distances or live in hiding. They believe that she is under the influence of someone who has so far managed to keep her under control.
The police have gone through messages and phone calls that Jesna had received. These messages and calls led to the male friend now under focus. The police had revealed that he had called her over a thousand times within a year. They had also said he is not cooperating with the interrogation.
