It is a frightening image – a mother elephant and her little one, literally set on fire, running for their lives as a frenzied mob chases them.
The photo, rightly titled 'Hell is Here', was captured by Biplab Hazra and has won the Sanctuary Wildlife Photography Award.
The 'Hell' is in Bankura district of West Bengal, where human-elephant conflicts have reached alarming proportions.
Such incidents of people mindlessly throwing tar bombs and crackers at elephants just to keep them away from human settlements are said to be an almost daily happening in certain areas in the north and eastern parts of our country.
This almost 'everyday' photo has gone viral on social media and even prompted the international media to sit up and take notice of the harrowing way we treat our pachyderms. Yes, the same set of species whom we celebrate and include in our festivities and religious functions, amid much pomp and fervor.
And yet we take no action to protect the large animal or avoid human-elephant conflicts.
