Tirupur: A court here on Tuesday handed death sentence to six people for killing a dalit youth, Shankar in Udumalpet in 2016, in a suspected case of ‘honor’ killing. The court found 11 of the accused guilty but acquitted the victim's mother-in-law and two others.
Shankar and his wife, Kausalya, were brutally attacked by a gang in Udumalpet in 2016. The crime was allegedly committed at the behest of her father, who was opposed to their inter-caste marriage.
The girl's father and the quotation gang's leader, Jagadeeshwaran, were among the six who were awarded death sentence. The court also sentenced another accused to life term and another to five years imprisonment in the case.
Shankar, 22, and Kausalya, 19, were attacked by the motorcycle-borne gang in full public view on March 13, 2016, in Tirupur district, leading to the Dalit youth's death.
The couple had married despite opposition from their families.
A senior police officer said the girl's father, Chinnasamy, had allegedly paid Rs 50,000 as advance to the five-member gang to carry out the attack and the police recovered Rs 40,000 from them.
One of the accused also told the police that Chinnasamy decided to kill his daughter after he faced 'embarrassment' at a marriage function due to her act.
He had tried to separate the couple by offering a hefty sum to Shankar but the latter rejected it, the officer said.
Various political parties had condemned the killing.
Kausalya, who escaped with injuries, had then said her father was totally opposed to their relationship and threatened to act against Shankar.
