Kolkata: Barely two weeks after the CPM reiterated its uncompromising opposition to the BJP at the Party Congress in Hyderabad, embattled comrades in Bengal's Nandigram have partnered with the BJP to regain some ground from the ruling Trinamool Congress.
The CPM Bengal unit has played down the cooperation with arch-rival BJP as an attempt to resist the onslaught of the Trinamool Congress. The CPM and the BJP have agreed to support each other in the upcoming elections to the Nandigram district parishad.
A popular movement in Nandigram and the police oppression of agitating farmers triggered the incidents that brought down the CPM's 35-year rule of Bengal. The once mighty party was not even able to file nomination papers for its candidates in Nandigram.
Faced with the formidable muscle power of the Trinamool Congress, the CPM leadership called for a meeting of all opposition parties, including the BJP. The Congress and the Left parties also attended the meeting.
The parties agreed to support each other in those wards where they were unable to put up their own candidates. Leaders of the parties vowed to fight the tyranny of Mamata Banerjee's party. The tacit pact has not been officially acknowledged by the CPM or the BJP.
The BJP and the other opposition parties have agreed to support SUCI candidates in three wards.
