He was touted the next Don Bradman for his batting exploits, but the world has just turned upside down for Steve Smith. The 28-year-old was slapped with a one-year ban by Cricket Australia (CA) for his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal that has shaken the cricket world. The former captain was humiliated at the at the O R Tambo International Airport at Gauteng on Wednesday as a few persons booed at him and called him a cheat.
The security officials had a tough time to escort him off to the departure lounge. Smith, along with David Warner and Cameron Bancroft, was sent home following the scandal.
Warner too has been banned from international and domestic cricket for a year by CA.
Opener Bancroft, who applied sandpaper to the ball and then hid the sandpaper in his trousers, was banned for nine months.
Smith and Warner have also been barred from the upcoming Indian Premier League season by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
