Ever since veteran actor Jagathy Sreekumar met with an accident that altered his life, the day of Vishu has been an extremely pleasant occasion for him. The actor, who is yet to fully recover from the trauma, is visited by hundreds of his fans and well-wishers, besides kin, to shower greetings and pleasantries on him.
KPCC president MM Hassan is one such visitor who never misses the date to convey him Vishu greetings. The Congress leader reached Jagathy's house in the morning on Sunday, handed him the Vishu Kaineetam (money as a token gift) and offered him fruits and vegetable as part of the ritual. Hassan has been visiting Jagathy on the day of Vishu for the past eight years.
"I am joining millions of Jagathy's well-wishers in their prayers for his complete recovery and return to Malayalam cinema," Hassan told reporters after meeting Jagathy.
Meanwhile, Jagathy Sreekumar's son Rajkumar said the acting doyen would return to the screen before long. "There is a lot of improvement in the treatment, of late. If this continues, we hope that he would be back in films next year," he said.
Jagathy Sreekumar had met with a car accident in the wee hours of March 10, 2012, at Panambra, near Calicut University, while he was on his way to a shooting location. Though the multiple surgeries and protracted medical treatment saved his life, the actor was robed of his ability to speak and move his body freely. Jagathy Sreekumar, son of noted theater artist Jagathy N K Achary, had debuted in the film Chattambi Kalyani released in 1975 and then went on to act in more than one thousand films.
Though an inevitable element in Malayalam cinema, Jagathy had only once acted in a non-Malayalam film – the Tamil film Aadum Koothu directed by Malayalam film-maker TV Chandran. Jagathy Sreekumar's sudden slip into inactive mode had left a huge void in Malayalam cinema, as the actor had always maintained a class of his own in whatever roles he had essayed.
