KTM_3RD-P24 SPO.indd, 'E,' set in Kerala but meant for all audience: Kukku Surendran Filmmaker Kukku Surendran

The paranormal thriller 'E', marked as a comeback movie of Mollywood's yesteryear heroine Gautami after a long hiatus, is supposed to have elements which the Keralite folk can easily relate with. Filmmaker Kukku Surendran told Onmanorama in an interview that E, which was originally planned as a Bollywood movie was replanted to Kerala as it connected well with the cultural premise and the mythical elements.

“I was born in Harippad in Alappuzha district, Kerala. I grew up amid superstitions and myths surrounding serpents, spirits and ferocious Goddesses residing on tall trees in sacred grooves. I don't think any other part of India could easily relate to such detailed mythical symbols,” he said. Kukku said that initially when Sangeeth Sivan, who is also his first cousin, conceived the story idea of E, they sat for a series of discussions with Bollywood script writers and filmmakers. Later, he called up Kukku for a combined project, which they could work out in an environment they grew up together.

“We never thought twice about the locations and ambiance. It is all about the surroundings of our ancestral home in Harippad. A couple of scenes have also been shot inside the Mannarasala temple. I and Sangeeth worked on the script staying in the same house where the story takes place,” he said.

Elaborating on the plot, Kukku said that E is not a typical horror movie with stereotyped ghosts and tales of revenge. It is a thriller that unfurls a saga of relationships, love, mythologies, strictures and beliefs intertwined, he added.
