The holy month of Ramzan begins on Saturday in Kerala with the sighting of the moon at Kappad in Kozhikode.
Pannakad Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal, the supreme leader of the Indian Union Muslim League, made the announcement after the sighting of the moon.
For a month, Muslims will fast from dawn to dusk, engage in special prayers and keep away from several temporal activities.
Muslims in Kerala constitute 88.73 lakh of the 3.30 crore population.
Ramzan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, ends with with Eid ul-Fitr and normally depending on the calendar it lasts either 29 or 30 days, with again the sighting of the new moon the indicator.
