Kochi: The Ernakulam district jail superintendent has been transferred to Kannur, his hometown. It was not clear if the transfer had anything to do with the embarrassing letter a prisoner had sent to actor Dileep in connection with the sexual assault of an actress but the authorities termed the move as routine.
Sunil Kumar aka ‘Pulsar’ Suni, the first accused in the attack case, had sent a letter, written by another prisoner on a paper bearing the superintendent’s seal, to Dileep in a threatening tone in April. He had even called up the actor’s manger and director Nadhirshah from the jail at Kakkanad.
Superintendent V. Jayakumar had said that Suni never used a phone from the prison premises and exonerated the officer in the issue of the letter.
The jail department termed the transfer as part of a general reshuffle. Jayakumar is moving closer home and he was ready for the shift, the officials said.
Kannur central jail joint superintendent Chandrababu will replace Jayakumar. Kannur central jail superintendent Mohana Kumaran will be in charge of the open jail at Nettukaltheri. He will be replaced by Poojappura central jail joint superintendent Nirmalanand.
Another notable transfer was that of Cheemeni jail joint superintendent Jagadeesan. The officer from Thaliparamba has been promoted as the district jail superintendent in Alappuzha. The officer has had an eventful stint at Cheemeni, where he was embroiled in controversies such as cow worship and RSS study classes. The CPM leaders from Kannur and Kasaragod wanted him out of their area. The Cheemeni jail superintendent is under suspension.
Alappuzha district jail superintendent Sajan will be in charge of the sensitive Cheemeni prison.
Wayanad district jail superintendent Vijayan will move to Kottayam, while Vythiri special sub jail superintendent Sajeevan will be in charge of the district jail at Mananthawadi.
Palakkad special sub jail superintendent Yohannan has been appointed as a special officer at the Muttom jail, while Kozhikode special sub jail superintendent K. Venu moves on as Kannur central jail joint superintendent.
