Kattakada

Thiruvananthapuram: The trial operations of the 220 KV Kattakada substation of the KSEB has begun. The substation is expected to provide a permanent solution to the intermittent power disruptions and blackouts in the capital city. The formal inauguration of the sub-station, to supply electricity to the Vizhinjam port, is expected soon. The electricity transmission is being facilitated through drawing a double moose power line for a distance of 27 km from Pothencode to Kattakada at a cost of Rs 115 crore.

Electricity up to 1,000 MW can be transmitted through the line and about 108 towers have been erected for the purpose of drawing the line.

The electricity for the district currently comes from Pothencode sub-station and from the Edamon sub-station in Kollam district.

The electricity from the 220 KV Edamon sub-station is currently brought to the Paruthippara 110 KV substation to meet the electricity needs of some parts of the district.

The electricity generated from the 220 KV Pothencode substation is currently brought to the Tirumala, Aruvikkara, Nedumangad and Kattakada 110 KV substations for distribution to the remaining parts of the district.

A damage in any of these lines had resulted in a blackout in some areas in the district. This had also disrupted the pumping operations and water supply distribution from Aruvikkara.

During the last three months, there were two blackouts in the district following damage to some electricity lines. The new 220 KV substation in Kattakada is in addition to the existing 110 KV sub-station and will insure the city against technical snags and constant break-downs.
