Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala government has issued orders raising the retirement age of doctors in the health services from 56 to 60. The pensionable age of doctors teaching in medical institutions has been raised from 60 to 62.

The government is of the opinion that there is a shortage of service-minded doctors in the state, and that the expertise of experienced doctors is essential to handle the epidemics that keep on recurring. The service rules of doctors will be amended suitably soon.

Doctors remain divided over the retirement age. Different organizations of teaching staff at the medical colleges feel that there is still time to reconsider the decision as it will be implemented only from April next year. It is understood that organizations like KGMCTA, KGMPGTA and KGMMFA are set to sit in a combined meeting this week to oppose the new orders.
