Palakkad: The Railways will discontinue trains that are incurring heavy losses, sources said here. Several passenger services in the Ernakulam-Kollam sector are among those facing elimination.
Eight passenger trains in this route were stopped months ago on the grounds of inadequate staff. However, it is understood that the measure was mainly prompted by the lack of adequate revenue.
Earlier, the Eastern Railway had discontinued eight services in Bengal as they were running on heavy loss.
The Railways insist that the states will have to share half the cost if loss-making trains were to continue.
The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament had examined the issue and had, in its reports No.42 and 88, recommended action in this regard.
The reports also mandate that the states must be notified in advance about services that will be scrapped.
