Pulamanthole: Himadri Maji, an Assamese girl studying in Kerala, has proved a point – that non-Keralites can beat local students in Malayalam proficiency. Now with chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan himself recognizing her achievements and inviting her to meet him on Republic Day, Himadri’s happiness knows no bounds.
Himadri is the daughter of Abhilash Maji, a laborer from Gulahat in Assam who came to Kerala 11 years ago in search of a livelihood, and Purobi. She is a class 6 student at Pulamanthole Government High School. Himadri will start for the state capital along with her parents and teachers Manilal and Pramod by train on January 25.
Apart from visiting the chief minister, Himadri will take part in a weekly program that deals with the problems faced by migrant laborers in the state, along with the chief minister.
Himadri studied at Paloor LP School till class 4, before joining her present school. Apart from excelling in studies, the youngster has been taking part in several Malayalam reading and handwriting competitions since an early age, beating other students whose mother tongue was Malayalam. Himadri also won the first Malayalam award instituted by the Panmana Ramachandran Nair Foundation, among several other honors.
When he arrived in Kerala, Abhilash Maji had planned to spend only a few years here. He also had apprehensions over whether Himadri would pick up Malayalam when he admitted her to school here. However, putting all such fears to rest, Himadri fell in love with Malayalam and left even local students far behind in proficiency over the language. Abhilash Maji and family, who live in a rented quarters, have loved Kerala and Malayalam so much that they did not visit their home state during the last six years. The local people too have reciprocated, showering their affection on the Assamese family which loves Malayalam.
