Thiruvananthapuram: The Crime Branch has again questioned actress Amala Paul in the Puducherry vehicle registration case. Amala, it is learnt, stuck to her earlier stand that she had a rented accommodation in Puducherry. However, she did not produce any documents to substantiate her statement, which made officials suspect that the actress was repeating her 'lies'.
Amala Paul has been charged with presenting a fake address proof to register her luxury car in Puducherry and evading vehicle tax to the tune of around Rs 20 lakh in Kerala.
After the Crime Branch booked her in the case, she had approached the High Court and secured an anticipatory bail. While granting bail, the court had directed her to appear before the investigating officers within 10 days. Accordingly, Amala Paul reached the Crime Branch office in Kochi and SP A Santhosh Kumar and other officials questioned her. After recording her statement, they let her off.
Amala Paul claims that she has rented a place in Puducherry to stay while visiting the place for film shooting. The car was registered in this address, she told officials. However, Crime Branch officials inspected the address mentioned by Amala Paul and found that it was three-storeyed building where several families stayed. Numerous luxury cars were registered in the same address and it was improbable that Amala Paul lived there, the officials believe. Moreover, with no documents to prove her residence, investigators have concluded that the actress was lying.
Officials will now apprise the High Court of the progress of the investigation and resort to further steps.
Crime Branch had earlier arrested actors Suresh Gopi MP and Fahadh Faasil in similar vehicle cases. They were released on bail after their arrests were recorded.
