Vadayambadi: The police cracked down on a group of Dalit activists demanding access to a public ground walled off by a temple at Vadayambadi near Kolencherry. The Dalit groups took out a protest march on Sunday when men claiming to be members of Hindu Munnani confronted them. The police interfered when both groups started challenging each other.

Dalit activists alleged that the police were harsh on them and even children were not spared. They protested in front of the police station demanding the release of the Dalits. Some of the mediamen were also injured in the melee.

Dalit groups have alleged that the Nair Service Society-owned temple had encroached on public space near it. The police had earlier evicted the protesters from a makeshift shed near the temple.
