Arrested BSF commandant part of int'l smuggling racket, says CBI Jibu T Mathew was nabbed by the CBI from a train on the way from Bengal to Alappuzha.

Thiruvananthapuram: The BSF commandant arrested in Kerala with a stash of cash likely received the money from a notorious international smuggler, the CBI has said. The central agency told a court in Thiruvananthapuram that Jibu T Mathew was part of an international racket that thrived on the illegal smuggling of money between national boundaries.

Mathew was nabbed by the CBI from a train on the way from Bengal to Alappuzha. The sleuths found Rs 45 lakh on him, covered in plastic bags and squeezed into the clothes in his bag. The commandant has confessed that the money was a bribe from the smugglers on the Bangladesh border.

The CBI came up with more serious accusations on Wednesday as the court took up his bail plea. The court observed that the case was of a serious nature.

The CBI wanted the court to make smuggling kingpin Bishu Sheikh a co-accused in the case. Sheikh, wanted by the National Investigation Agency and other security agencies, had been in touch with Mathew for several years, the CBI said.

The court accepted the CBI’s findings and directed the agency to continue the investigation without any pressures.

Mathew, a native of Pathanamthitta, has been remanded in CBI custody for two weeks.
