Thiruvananthapuram.: Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has sounded a warning for the southern coast after a low pressure area was identified in the sea off the coast of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.

According to the India meteorological department (IMD), 'the low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka and south Tamil Nadu coast is likely to become more marked and move westwards during next 48 hours. Under its influence, occasional thundersquall and strong winds are likely over parts of south Tamil Nadu coast, Comorin & Maldives areas during next 03 days.'

Reports also said that the low pressure area is expected to strengthen and move towards the western coast by Sunday and may bring strong winds of around 50 kmph while moving towards the Lakshadweep islands.

SDMA has issued warnings against fishermen venturing into the sea in the next 36 hours especially in the deep sea regions of Kanyakumari, Sri Lanka, Lakshadweep and Thiruvananthapuram as these areas will fall in the direct impact areas of the weather system.

A few months ago, a similar weather system had developed into the disastrous Cyclone Ockhi, killing several people in the southern coast.
