Driving test norms eased for disabled A driving test ground. File

Kottayam: The motor vehicles department has eased norms for those with sight and hearing impairments to obtain a driving licence.

By meeting a few conditions, hearing and visually disabled can now easily get a licence. A learner's licence and driving test will be held only for the disabled once in six months. The new measures will come into force from April 1.

CONDITIONS

Those having vision only in one eye will be given a licence to drive a non-commercial vehicle only. It is mandatory that the sight of the other eye should be 6/12 or more. Such people should also carry out certain eye tests suggested by the department and submit the certificate. The visually impaired can expect leniency in test rules.

If you are hearing impaired, you need to have a sticker on your vehicle displaying your impairment. Such people will have to take a normal driving test.

SUITABLE VEHICLE

The disabled need to apply for licence along with a vehicle that has been designed specifically for their disability or with features like automatic clutch and gear. If the department officials are convinced that the applicant can drive the vehicle safely, he or she will be given a driving licence.

CERTIFICATES MUST

A certificate stating the nature of disability of the applicant from a government hospital has to be submitted for the driving test. If there are a higher number of applicants with disability, a camp will be held especially for them.
