Kilimanoor (Thiruvananthapuram): The special investigation team (SIT) probing the murder of folk singer and ex-radio jockey Rajesh Kumar has named the lynchpin of the plot. The probe team believes that the man, known as Alibhai, a native of Ochira in Kollam, has fled the country.

Alibhai, who was hired by a Qatar-based businessman with whose wife Rajesh had an affair, has reportedly returned to the Gulf country via Nepal, using a fake passport. Efforts are on to bring him back to Kerala, along with the businessman. Interpol help could be sought.

Alibhai’s partner in the crime, Appunni of Kayamkulam, who also came from Qatar, could still be in India, the police believe. Alibhai had reached Kerala a day before Rajesh was hacked to death in his studio at Madavoor in Kerala capital. The SIT says a third suspect was also involved in the murder, but it has not identified him.

The three travelled from Madavoor to Kayamkulam after the murder and abandoned the weapons used in the murder there. It is assumed that they then proceeded to Thrissur and from there to Delhi via Bengaluru. From Delhi, Alibhai flew to Qatar via Kathmandu.

The police had issued lookout notices for Alibhai and Appunni in a bid to prevent them from leaving the country. But as travel documents were checked, it was found that they had come to Kerala using fake passports.

The SIT says the suspects had also fabricated documents showing that they were working abroad on the day of the murder.

The police still hope to track Appunni, who they believe is in the country. But since the plot was meticulous, the SIT is yet to find a way on how to net them. In a bid to mislead and trap the suspects, they had planted news stories saying the suspects had fled to Tamil Nadu, but that did not work.
