Kochi: Come Vishu and train commuters will have a unique gift from the Thiruvananthapuram division.
Following on the footsteps of the Palakkad division, Thiruvananthapuram division is all set to launch the 'UTS' app, which will let commuters buy unreserved second-class rail tickets.
The app can be downloaded from Google Playstore and Windows Store from April 14.
The non-transferable tickets work the same way as other tickets reserved online and do not need a print-out.
The app could help mitigate the long queues in front of railway counters.
The app works on GPS-enabled phones and can be booked only from a five kilometre radius outside railway stations.
It wouldn't work inside the station premises and on trains. The idea is to prevent ticketless passengers suddenly buying tickets via the app when they sight ticket examiners.
Platform tickets and season tickets can also be booked on the app.
The Palakkad division had implemented a similar system for booking unreserved tickets through mobile phones more than a year ago.
In this app, a one-time password is sent to the phone after the booking is made.
The passenger then has to show this OTP at the counter for a ticket.
