Manushi Chillar wins the Miss World title 2017Manushi Chhillar won the Miss World 2017 title in the competition held at Sanya, China. The 20-year-old Haryana beauty won the title in a stiff competition where beauties from 39 different countries vied to win the coveted pageant.
With the win, the pretty lass has ended the 17 year wait of the country to win the title after Priyanka Chopra won in 2000. Before her it was Aiswarya Rai (1994), Yukta Mookhey(1999), Diana Hayden (1997) and Reita Faria (1966) who clinched the beauty crown for India.
Chhillar made it to the top five spots in the pageant along with England, France, Kenya and Mexico. She hails from Haryana and had earlier this year won the Femina Miss India 2017. Born to doctor parents, she studied in St. Thomas School in New Delhi and Bhagat Phool Singh Government Medical College for Women in Sonepat.
In the question and answer round that followed her entry in the top five spots, Chhillar was asked which profession deserved the highest salary and why? She replied: “I think a mother is of highest respect. I don’t think its just about cash but love and respect she gives to someone. She is the biggest inspiration in my life. Mother should get the highest respect.”
Chillar's achievement also gains significance due to the fact that she hails from Haryana, a state notorious for its skewed sex ratio. As per 2011 census, it had a sex ratio of 879, which means it had 879 females for every 1,000 males. Recently, however, this has picked up with chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar claiming that the sex ratio has risen to 950. The state also earns bad press for the decisions of Khap panchayats, which are village collectives that blatantly discriminate against women.
National media reported that her family, including her brother and sister, were present at the pageant.
