Self goals are often heart-breaking and come in all types. Deflections, headers, tap-ins, etc. But it will be tough to find a more spectacular own goal than the one scored by Chile's star midfielder Arturo Vidal in a World Cup qualifier against Paraguay on Thursday.
The Bayern Munich star dived to head out a Paraguay free-kick midway through the first half, but his header soared into the corner of his own net.
Victor Caceres doubled the lead nine minutes into the second period and Richard Ortiz added a third in injury time to complete a miserable night for the Chileans in Santiago.
Chile, who have 23 points from 15 matches, are in the fourth spot in the South American table, ahead of Argentina on goal difference.
Brazil, the only one of the 10 teams to have already qualified for Russia, lead the table with 36 points after defeating Ecuador 2-0 at home. The top four teams qualify automatically for Russia 2018 and the fifth-placed side goes into a play-off against a rival from the Oceania confederation.
